Pen and Paper

Some people will say it's a waste of time using pen and paper when you can simply use Fireworks, but, sometimes a bit of paper and a pen is a good way to start.

I was on the phone with a client a few months back (after seeing their brand that day) and while they talked about what they wanted I used the back of an envelope to sketch a design for them. I didn't have Fireworks to hand.

So, I've used a bit of paper to sketch a rough design (see the attached image). It's not great but it gives an idea of what I want to work to.

You can go as detailed with this as you like, you can sketch each page, add colour, sizes and story board animation and usually there will be more to the sketch, but in this case I'm going with basic.

Now I need to get the sketch into Fireworks

LOL I find it always looks nice on pen and paper
I do it on pen and paper in meeting with client then pass this onto my designer who converts it to photoshop mockup - verify with client again then convert psd to html/css
If i could use photoshop effectively it would cut out the designer but i focus my energy on php/drupal/ssh other technical stuff.
Nice website by the way Cool

I agree, I'd never show anything like that to a client!

I just find it easier sometimes to sketch out the basic layout before I go on to do the design. Sometimes its just easier making some marks on paper than looking at a blank screen Wink

Cheers for the comment, its always good to get feedback
